The Glass Key plot

"The Tougher They Are—The Harder They Fall"

During a re-election campaign, corrupt politician Paul Madvig decides to break with his past. That is why he no longer supports the criminal Nick Varna, but seeks cooperation with his respected political opponent Ralph Henry. Henry's son Taylor Henry is a gambler who is in love with Opal Madvig, Paul's young sister. Paul is against their romance. Ed Beaumont, Paul's loyal assistant, finds Taylor Henry's body in the street. Nick Varna then takes advantage of newspaper publisher Clyde Matthews's dire financial situation by forcing him to suspect the murder of Taylor Henry through an article in his newspaper 'The Observer'.

The film starts at a fast pace and could have taken a little more time to establish the relationships between the characters. Also thought it was a pity that there was not more focus on the political intrigue and that they mainly continue to focus on not too convincing romances. Donlevy and especially Bendix are doing well, was less convinced by Lake and Ladd here. It's supposed to be an iconic noir duo, but it didn't do much for me. The scene where they stare at each other started out exciting, but it went on for so long and was so unsubtle that it became a bit silly. Also thought Ed Beaumont was a bit of a wannabe, who wasn't as bad-ass as he tried to be.

Still find it funny how characters in films from this genre (or maybe just this entire period) talk about eternal love and marriage while they barely know each other. "I've always loved you, from the first time I saw you, you're always in my dreams, you never leave my mind, here's an engagement ring, etc.." first met , where they spent at most 2 minutes together.

Like the two other films with Alan Ladd that I recently reviewed (This gun for hire and The Blue Dahlia) I like both the film and the actor better in that review , and the film mainly because of the strong role of Ladd - I've never really seen it in him, but I actually find him very convincing as a hypothermic tough guy (despite the physical limitation that reviewers apparently often need to draw attention to it), and when he puts on a poker face, his face is often (deliberately) hard to read. I don't like Veronica Lake that much, but on the other hand, the intriguing relationship between Ladd and Donlevy (sometimes full of affection, sometimes full of annoyance) forms a decent compensation. The plot is so complex that it actually remains unclear whether Ed Beaumont is "good" or "bad" (which is also typical of blacks), but what struck me most is the obvious delight that the character derives from William Bendix beating up Beaumont – that sadism, Ladd's smashed face and his drastic way of escaping (spoiler already revealed in the trailer above) must have been quite shocking in 1942, and it still haunts me to the unpleasant. Surprising that this was allowed by the film inspection at the time.

Nice noir but I've seen much better, besides I've never been so devastated by Veronica lake.

To understand the story a bit better, a rewatch might be useful because quite a lot happens.
