The Last Posse plot

"When six guns spoke the law"

After being tricked by the wealthy cattle baron Sampson Drune, a father and his two sons rob him and they flee. A posse, led by Sampson Drune, hunts down the three robbers. The posse also includes the regularly drunk and therefore unpopular Sheriff John Frazier. Especially Sampson Drune is not happy with that, because Frazier has quite a bit of influence on Jeb, his adopted son. When the three robbers are killed, some participants in the posse want to keep the stolen money for themselves, but Frazier resists.

I went to see this western because of the director, who has a knack for giving B-scripts an A-treatment, such as At gunpoint (1955), currently available on YouTube in a fine transfer, as is The last posse by the way. My esteemed predecessors have already swept the prairie sand from under my feet (here my metaphor falters), because I too thought this was an excellent western, the only blemish being that the way in which the monkey comes out of the sleeve (and which monkey that will be) is so clearly telegraphed, but perhaps that also makes me more curious about how the frictions within the posse will develop in the flashback. You never know with Broderick Crawford, but here he still gives a very strong lead role as an alcoholic sheriff, perhaps drawing on his own experience for his performance. Charles Bickford is as usual delightfully unpleasant, and John Derek makes a good impression alongside these two acting cannons, which clearly helps to keep the tension in this small but intriguing western. A nice (although not very complicated) mystery, beautiful shots of impressive landscapes, a few tough fights and a rather gruesomely filmed accident complete the total picture of a western that we can be glad has been saved from oblivion via this transfer.
