An old woman stops a bus for her near the woods of Eden Rock, Massachusetts. She sits down next to Lorna Webster, who returns home after two years of absence. The old woman asks Lorna for her name and tells of events in the village some 300 years ago. Women were burned at the stake for witchcraft. Lorna's ancestors would have been involved in those executions. Shortly after this conversation, the bus plunges into a lake. Lorna is the only survivor and the old woman is missing. In the village, Lorna's former fiancée, Doctor Matt Adams, is the only person happy to see her. Since Lorna's arrival, strange things have been happening in the village and the many villagers begin to believe that she is possessed by witchcraft and turn against her.
