In 1974 a play film was made about this event, but in this documentary you can see that Juliane Koepcke has to laugh a bit about the way in which she is portrayed in that film, namely as a very scared girl who is frightened by the danger that jumps out from behind every tree. In reality, Juliane Koepcke was quite familiar with the jungle, her father was a biologist and she grew up in a simple hut somewhere in a bush. That certainly saved her, because someone without knowledge of the jungle would probably never have made it.

The impressive story of Juliane Koepcke told in the raspy voice of Werner Herzog, who returns to familiar territory - the same piece of jungle where he filmed his Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre. But this is not a beautifully filmed grand epic, but a true story, a documentary with hand-held camera and the occasional talking head - although that is actually only Juliane herself.

In the series of all Herzog's documentaries, this may not be the best, but the subject is still fascinating. It will happen to you anyway, crash in the middle of the jungle and be the only passenger left alive. It would give you fewer nightmares.
