La Siciliana Ribelle plot

"What would drive a seventeen-year-old girl to betray her family? And if that family was the mafia?"

On a November morning in 1991, 17-year-old Rita approached the Public Prosecutor of Palermo, intending to justify the deaths of her father and her brother as members of the mafia. This was the first time the daughter of a mafia family openly rebelled against the traditionally male-led organization. From that day on, Rita's days were numbered. Rejected and threatened by her boyfriend, her hometown and even her mother, she was forced to leave Sicily and move to Rome where she now lives under a different name.

As very recent history interesting and impressive. But as a movie, it's less so.

Especially because there is not really a clear choice between the historical side of the story and the dramatization and themes that play a - very - large role in it, the film remains somewhat shaky and confused. Thus, Rita's inner conflict - revenge vs. justice, honor and family vs. doing what is right - rather inaccessible. On the other hand, that does give room for the somewhat teenaged charm of Veronica D'Agostino, and that gives the film something personal.

Whether that choice is therefore the right one can only really be determined for an Italian viewer. From the cold and distant Netherlands it is different, and we can only look with a slight surprise at how that apparently works in Italy. The norms and values that are deeply intertwined in the story are something different for us, they do not have the same weight. That is why it remains somewhat distant here and there, and feels different from an American mafia film, or a film about corruption and crime in the Netherlands.

But that doesn't make it a bad movie. Quite an eye-opener, a reason to take a moment to reflect on the cultural differences that already exist within Europe, and how deeply they are embedded in society. And let's not forget, the story told in this movie is not all that long ago. Naive to think it's all very different now.

Great true crime drama. This one is way better for me than movies like The Godfather. In this film you don't have charismatic mafiosi with heavy voices carrying the film, but real criminals and a girl who grew up in that environment. Perhaps that's why not as cool as Hollywood mafia movies, but I think this one is a lot closer to the truth than those movies.

To be honest, I didn't bother with the acting, but I thought she acted well. Only the mother and the crying scenes failed to convince me, but otherwise I thought the acting was okay. I couldn't do anything with the character of the mother, I couldn't fathom her actions, maybe she really was like that.

By the way, the film is the dramatization of the documentary Diario di una Siciliana Ribelle (2002) by the same director. 3.5*

I went to watch this film unprepared and with a title like this I already suspected that this would be about the mafia. But at first I thought it was about a local mafia movie. That's something different. But the film went much further. So it was about the life of a girl who wanted to dismantle the mafia. A fascinating story and beautifully filmed.
