Low average here, a 1.5 from Stinissen... Do you have any substantiation for that?

Nakadai is back in fine form in this film. His acting and facial expressions are truly invaluable.

Very nicely shot, nice intermediate shots - which, unlike in Ozu - indicate the place where the next shot will take place.
Also very innovative/fun in the way of metaphors. For example, a sex scene was depicted using several train cars coupled together, culminating in the whistle of the steam locomotive—that made me smile.

Like many Japanese films, the main theme in this one is "the messed-up family," which must have been one of the first. Every member of the family is seriously screwed, and everyone acts purely out of self-interest. It's therefore a good decision for the maid to just kill everyone at once at the end. Haha.

3.5*
