A very somber (I don't think I saw a single person smile in the hour and a half it lasts) and tedious film noir. The script is weak, with far too little happening, and the denouement is predictable. Director Ogilvie isn't sure whether to make a polished crime film or an atmospheric portrait of Sydney in the 1920s, and therefore falls seriously short on both counts. The acting isn't great either. Byrne has some talent, but is too mousy to be convincing as a strong femme fatale. Weaving is usually good in a supporting role, but here in the lead, his stylized, posh acting style works against him, and he portrays a supposed master criminal who never truly frightens you. This is one of the worst Australian films I've seen in recent years. Skip it.

A decent crime film set in 1920s Australia. Jazz is clearly hip, as are suits and hideous haircuts. Diplomatically, you could say: You've got to love it.

Sadly, the music, the atmosphere, and, of course, the acting are among the main reasons to watch this film. Rose Byrne and Hugo Weaving certainly don't do a bad job, but they can't hide the fact that the screenplay is riddled with clichés.

Boredom actually lurks throughout the entire film, only to completely take over in the last fifteen minutes or so, and that certainly doesn't seem to me to be the intention of a crime film.

The main characters deserve better

Moderate.

A trifle with some allure, though I didn't understand why those authentic images had to be included. Still, the set design and atmosphere were very pleasant, as were the acting and camerawork, which even had a few witty moments. In short, a film more than worth seeing.
