A Bullet Is Waiting plot

"...and after the kiss..."

Cally Canham is a young woman who, along with her father David, runs a remote ranch of sheep in California. A plane carrying Sheriff Munson and manslaughter accused Ed Stone crashes near the Canham Ranch. Both men are cared for by Cally, who at the time does not know anything about the background of the two men. It doesn't take long for Cally to fall in love with Stone and she is convinced that he is innocent. The jealous Munson tries to convince Cally otherwise, but fails. Cally convinces Munson and Stone to take the three of them to court in Utah.

What is this movie? Are westerns always supposed to be period pieces? Are film noirs always in black and white and in the city? is the somewhat unclear morality of this film another sign that this is noir? Or is Wikipedia just right? They call this a film noir crime western movie.

The setting is interesting, a farm in the middle of nowhere, while the period of pioneers is long gone. The father of the Jean Simmons figure moved there as a philosopher with a rather flatly worked out disappointment in the world. Simmons falls in love with Calhoun and wants to teach him culture or actually just save him.

Is it good movie. Mwah. The movie has a pretty nice idea, but the execution doesn't really work. Simmons and Calhoun have 0.0 chemistry. The cinematography is perfectly fine and it is understandable why this went in color. The film never gets better than the strong first 20 minutes.

I round up because of the interesting genre clash.
