Frygtelig Lykkelig plot

Robert, a policeman from Copenhagen, is temporarily sent to a provincial town due to a professional error. As another slow, cloudy day draws to a close in South Jutland, residents watch the young man's arrival from the big city with a satisfied and curious look on their closed faces. The policeman, who does everything by the book, gradually discovers the local customs and begins to sense that there are disturbing secrets hidden behind the facade of what seems to be a very ordinary provincial life.

A film that unfortunately stays too much within the lines, actually has everything to become a top film (including Kim Bodnia) but as far as I'm concerned this should have been either more serious with a touch of Calvaire or more in the direction of a Fargo, this remains one hanging in between..

Based on true events... you'll just live there.

That raises my score slightly. In itself a quiet film that was quite captivating with some drastic events. Appropriate atmosphere and a good cast. Strange story that indeed could have happened anywhere with some highlights such as the drinking contest.

A bit of the same melancholy misery as in Van Warmerdam's better films. Or petty village morals in a surrealistic tale about infidelity and domestic violence. Everyone knows what tragedy is going on behind the front door of that one family, while no one can or wants to intervene. The new police officer on duty is the only one who lets the law outweigh the agreement not to interfere with each other. Initially, Robert Hansen (Jacob Cedergren) intervenes with the best of intentions in the burgeoning family violence, but then becomes impressed by the advances of the lady of the house. Genuine concern becomes voyeurism and an obsessive desire to own her. What makes him a better man than the criminal he's targeting?! It gives 'Frygtelig Lykkelig' (2008) a sad undertone of imperfect people who do not necessarily mean something evil, but smother each other with their suffocating desires. Wonderful atmospheric images of empty landscapes and the swampy swamp where all the sins of the village disappear. Quite by accident, a good friend comes from the area where it takes place. He also knows the creator and some of the actors. Always fun!
