Ex-racing driver and celebrated champion Stephen Children (Damon) - now a writer - wants to write a book that dispels the myth surrounding the person of Joe Machin (Campbell), who is currently at the top of motor racing; this out of revenge because he once had something with his fiancée Henny (Anders). By accident, Joe saves Stephen's life and the two become friends.
