The beginning is very strong. Too bad it sags after that. The ending is a lot stronger, but the level of the beginning doesn't really return.

The film has a very unique style of telling and filming. The story is especially spiced up in the beginning with various really idiotic situations and jokes - both real and subtle visual jokes. If there had been a bit more continuity in this, this might have become a real top film.

Black and white is a good choice, it adds to the film's unique style.

Great Bulgarian film. The black and white also makes the film very special. It all starts as a prison film in which Moth is wrongly convicted, and in which he is released again in the post-Communist Bulgaria of the 1960s. The film does not really seem to have a goal. It is more the life story of Moth, and how he ends up in all kinds of bizarre situations. What kind, you have to see for yourself, but I can guarantee that the Eastern Europeans show a black sense of humor here. The gloomy Eastern Bloc atmosphere is also very well portrayed here, thanks to the black and white.

Great movie.

3.5*

'Zift' (2008) never quite escapes the air of a somewhat pretentious graduation film. But this film does have fine film noir influences and a wild sexual attraction between Moth (Zachary Baharov) and Mantis (Tanya Ilieva). 'Zift' (2008) is also quite hilarious at times. Like in the farcical 'action scenes' in which Moth tries to escape from his attackers. Or in the bizarre asides in which colorful characters describe Moth's reality with their own anecdotes about coincidence and fate. Not a film that blows you away and makes you gasp for breath, but 'Zift' (2008) does have something authentic.
