Successful comedy about a family that hangs together like loose sand because everyone has his or her own agenda or secrets. A smooth film with an excellent cast, which treats you to more than an hour and a half of pleasant entertainment. Too bad that the denouements (plural) are a bit rushed but otherwise well done.

Andy Garcia always brings good memories for me. Last year I was not only allowed to see LeBron James, but I also sat next to Garcia himself during a game of the Los Angeles Lakers. Except that I only now saw one of his best roles, in this 'City Island'. But very nice! Because what a great movie. A family, in which everyone has their own secrets. The setting in the ''good'' part of the Bronx creates a charming atmosphere, where all developments are timed just right. From the witty humor to the touching denouement. The audition of Garcia, my son with his interest in fat eating women, the stripping daughter, moms with her own agenda, an entire family that smokes secretly, etc. Feelgood from a high shelf. Everything works in this very fine film. Constantly watching with a big smile.

At the first scenes I thought; oh no hey, we're getting another prison movie. But that is not the case. It is a film about a family where all family members have their secrets from each other. Even if some secrets are more serious than others. But the film builds up very nicely. Very un-American actually. It's also not too predictable and too clichéd as you would expect from most American movies. And in my rating the film went from 3.5 to 4. Until the last scenes came and the denouement. Unfortunately, the film turned out to be very American. Suddenly clichés appeared for a larger audience and tears were also drawn out. Too bad, because the movie could have done without it.
