The Edge of Seventeen plot

"You're only young once… is it over yet?"

Everyone knows that growing up can be difficult. High school student Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) also has to deal with the difficult vicissitudes of adolescence when she learns that her older brother is getting into a relationship with her best friend Krista. Nadine feels increasingly lonely, until she encounters a thoughtful boy who changes the case. An unexpected friendship means that maybe things don't have to be so bad after all.

Once every ten years there is such a schoolgirl role that sticks. This decade may well be Hailee Steinfeld as the fickle teen who is always sarcastic and never mince words. Her outer clothes are too loose, her skirt too short. The best scenes are the dialogues with Woody Harrelson, who is mainly there as a confidant and counselor, but without the usual moralizing tone. On the DVD extras you can see Harrelson with the giggles. A little less so is the love story, with the wrong boy and the cool but insecure boy who happens to have a spacious villa with a swimming pool at his disposal. She has one thing in common with her mother: an excessive need for control and an unwillingness to accept change. If she overcomes that weakness, that's a step towards adulthood. The alternation between serious and funny scenes helps to keep the rhythm.

The Edge of Seventeen seems to be your average high school comedy with a lot of fuss about a boyfriend, girlfriend, a helpful teacher... But really that's just the display case here. Behind it is a drama about a teenager who struggles for years with sadness and loneliness. At an age where you already feel difficult in your own skin. Difficulty talking and every drop in the water causes huge ripples.

The film has a hugely impressive lead actress with Hailee Steinfeld who won several awards for the role. You can feel the sadness she struggles with, the closedness of her world, the uncertainty. Not really selfish, but her world turned in on itself. The supporting characters complement it nicely. It turned out to be an exciting movie.

Wonderful coming of age film in which most roles are also very strongly cast, with Woody Harrelson as the ultimate standout in my opinion, a versatile actor who became known for Cheers.

The story has of course been filmed more than once, but not always so convincingly. The comedy works, but also the drama elements at the same time, as a viewer you feel completely for Nadine but also certainly with her best friend who only wants the best for her. Yes it is predictable but at the same time also a film that manages to impress because the characters are well and humanly developed.

Definitely enjoyed!

4*
