Tarawa Beachhead plot

"Beachheading Into Hell!"

During the Battle of Guadalcanal, Sergeant Tom Sloan witnesses his platoon commander, Lieutenant Joel Brady, shoot one of his own men for his incompetence. Sloan is convinced that this shooting was a murder, but he is unable to prove it and remains silent. While on leave in New Zealand, Sloan visits Ruth Nelson-Campbell, the victim's widow, and eventually falls in love with her. Then Sloan learns that Brady, now a captain, is having a romance with Ruth's sister Paula, presumably to gain access to the Nelson family's fortune. Sloan and Brady are recalled due to the invasion of Tarawa, but a violent confrontation between the two on the island of Tarawa is inevitable.

Through a Facebook group I am in I have now compiled a nice list of old war films and this afternoon I started with it via YouTube in this case and thus easy to follow. And a film with the title Tarawa Beachhead creates expectations since Tarawa was an incredibly bloody scene and a source of interest from a young age. But if only it were as beautiful as the title and the expectations...

With the good points we are quickly done where one starts in the jungle of Guadalcanal to then end with the necessary archive footage on Tarawa with a pretty good replica of Japanese command bunker. For example, the image of the amtracs in line looks good and that also applies to the action. In addition, the whole with its tensions between the officers, and certain things like wanting to take the credit, and leaving people behind to save their own skin, reminds me very much of Bloody Beaches by Delano Stagg.

But further, the film only lasts a good 70 minutes, yet a very large part is used for leave, home and relational concerns. In addition, the tension between the two men is not sufficiently expressed, the acting is not very good and the heroic ending is just a step in the wrong direction. As already said, the title is very promising, but the film is not, with the greatest weakness being the time wasted on peripheral matters. Anyway, quickly on to the next film because this was not really good.
