A classic and popular English "morality play" from 1947 by JB Priestley, solidly adapted for the screen and never boring thanks to an effective "opening out" (the events recounted by the characters in the play take place in the film version in flashback at added locations). Excellent acting by everyone, particularly Alastair Sim as the half-sad, half (seemingly?) good-natured inspector and Bryan Forbes as the house libertine. An excellent adaptation of a play, as only the English do so well.

An excellent film in which a police inspector disrupts a wealthy family's dinner due to an investigation. An Agatha Christie-style murder mystery set in 1912. Well-structured with various flashbacks from different characters. A strong plot that is simply well-constructed and has a clear moral. Partly due to the short running time, this film is completely flat.

Every now and then, I randomly fire up one of those old-fashioned English crime dramas on Netflix. Usually solid entertainment in less than an hour and a half. The title An Inspector Calls sounded vaguely familiar, so I chose that one. It is probably because it is a classic in English education and has also been adapted into a film quite often. It is also not so much a crime film in the Agatha Christie school, but more of a parable along the lines of A Christmas Carol. All the more fitting that the inspector in the title is played by Alastair Sim, who plays Scrooge in the most famous British adaptation of that story.

Inspector Poole bursts in on a dinner hosted by the family of wealthy industrialists, the Birlings. The poor woman, Eva Smith (Jane Wenham), has committed suicide or been murdered by drinking a large amount of bleach. The Birlings wonder what respectable people like them have to do with it. The inspector explains it to them one by one. Not such respectable people, after all.

Director Guy Hamilton (best known for Goldfinger and three other James Bond classics) manages to translate the play to film perfectly, but it is primarily the cast that elevates the film. Everyone is good, but alongside Sim, the standouts for me are Olga Lindo as the icy, snobbish Mrs. Birling and Bryan Forbes as the seemingly charming free spirit of a youngest son, Eric Birling.

(Watched on Netflix)
