Crime in the Streets plot
"How can you tell them to be good when their girl friends like them better when they're bad!..."
Frankie Dane is the leader of the 'Hornets', a local street gang that is a nuisance and a problem for the neighborhood and the police. When one of his members is reported to the police by neighbor McAllister for possessing a gun, Frankie vows revenge. When McAllester also publicly humiliates him, Frankie decides to have him killed. When only two members of the Hornets, the mentally unstable Lou Macklin and full-fledged member-to-be "Baby" Angelo, are willing to kill McAllister, the rest of the gang joins both of them. Social worker Ben Wagner, who runs the local youth clubhouse, tries to sow the members of the Hornets to prevent the murder through Frankie's younger brother Richie. Through Richie, Wagner also tries to get the help of his mother and Gioia, "Baby" Angelo's father.
