"… that joy that good people radiate."
Asturias, Spain, early 20th century; Urbano arrives in a small town to work for the municipality. He immediately falls for Estrella, daughter of the local landowner Joaco. Politically, the city is divided into two camps with the mayor Atila as the evil leader. Urbano tries to remain neutral, but that changes when Estrella is raped by Atila's sons just before her wedding to Urbano.
