The Maze plot

"The Deadliest Trap in the World!"

Gerald abruptly breaks his engagement to the beautiful Kitty and leaves for his uncle's castle in the Scottish Highlands. Kitty and her aunt follow him a few weeks later and discover that he is suddenly very old. This apparently has to do with the maze that lies in the garden of the castle.

Atmosphere-less castle.

Besides the fact that the monster isn't introduced until very late, the creature itself is also quite disappointing. This would all be less of a problem if the flimsy story hadn't been drawn out so endlessly in the atmosphere-less castle. The plot isn't bad, but the film would likely have fared much better at 60 minutes.

Average.

A decent plot, beautiful music, gorgeous sets (which would have been even more impressive in 3D), excellent performances from the two engaged couples, Aunt Edith who can look so concerned and so reserved that I half-expected her to actually be conspiring with Gerald to keep Kitty away from Craven Castle, two delightfully creepy servants, and an effective (if brief) use of the title object – this film got a lot of things right for me, and because the title gives nothing away, the plot remains genuinely mysterious. The ending is a bit of a disappointment, even for an amphibian and reptile lover like me, and this isn't the fastest or smoothest film ever, but because of the well-sustained atmosphere of doom and gloom, I could handle it all.
Funny comment on the internet: "My son and I cried and felt sorry for the old lord. Two hundred years! Imagine having a family member who was that old and still around – how I would have protected him. // We both loathed Kitty from the top of her uber-ladylike coiffed head to the bottom of her shoes. What a ghastly, intrusive little pain in the neck. Can't think why Gerald married her after learning what a rude, entitled little beast she was." That's how it is again!
