Beautiful film in which a woman and a junkie, both for their own reasons, enter into a marriage of convenience. A good and often poignant story. Shown with a lot of realism, avoiding any form of false sentiment. Still, the film is gripping at some moments. The acting is also very natural yet strong.

My seventh Dardenne in the meantime and I also think this is one of his lesser films. Not that the film is bad, but for me it is less intense, less captivating. In this film, the Dardennes cite a theme that resides within marriages of convenience and the criminal network that tries to profit from them. Claudy is a targeted and easy victim to link Lorna (literally) so that she acquires the necessary identity papers. But the mafia network is impatient and greedy and the question is whether Lorna's silence can withstand that.

In the lead roles we see a good Arta Dobroshi, who is aloof on the one hand and offensive on the other. Claudy's death - a suggestive thing to the viewer - and her pregnancy make her realize that her boyfriend Sokol and his cronies don't have the best intentions for her. Also a good intense and believable role by Jérémie Renier, by the way, who does an excellent job as a drug addict.

Winner of the screenplay prize at the Cannes festival, for me rather solid. But it does show again that the Dardennes are the masters of film dripping with social realism.

As always in the Dardenne films, it is teeming with rather rotten characters - whether or not driven by their social background - and misery is trumps. The only bit sympathetic I found junkie Renier but he dies after an hour. What he left behind was other idle characters. Arta Dobroshi as Lorna is going through an interesting development, transforms from perpetrator to victim, but it didn't stir much for me. Even though, as always with the Dardenne films, I had the feeling of watching a documentary (without a jerky camera that is). Good acting performance I think.
Also a special symbolism for to have Lorna end up in a situation of sham pregnancy after the planned marriage of convenience. About 90% of what happens in the film is fake, has to be hidden from the other person or, in the worst case of Lorna, from herself. This doesn't make you happy, but I would be surprised if that the intention of the filmmakers.
