Sea of Sand plot

A small battalion of English soldiers is sent out to destroy a German petroleum depot. This as preparatory work for an important plan of attack in North Africa. When they arrive at the scene, they see a large number of tanks and realize that military intelligence must be informed about this, otherwise the Tommies will be in for an unpleasant surprise. However, the Germans do not want the attackers to escape from their petroleum reserves just like that, resulting in a massive chase across the desert of Africa.

Monday afternoon as usual to work on a film from the war list with this Sea of Sand that basically tells the story of the SAS. And this also turned out, following more of these oldies, to be a fine war film.

The British front in North Africa was under considerable pressure in 1941 after the successes achieved by the Afrika Korps, which is why it was decided to set up groups of specialists who would cause unrest deep behind enemy lines, disrupt communications and especially sabotage the long supply lines. And so the SAS was created, which mainly had the reputation of being bandits, crooks and adventurers and did not really fit in with the British, fighting like a gentleman, mentality. Nevertheless, it became a success with the organization as it is now with a renowned and versatile commando corps. And here we see the basic principle of a group of soldiers operating on their own far behind enemy lines.

The image of the vast desert is beautiful, the tone tends towards adventure, especially in the beginning, as we are used to with older films from the genre, it is more than well and beautifully made, it shows the dangers of the desert, getting stranded in the sand, the heat, the vastness and distances, bad luck and of course the encounter with the enemy from the air or on the ground, of which it is not always clear whether it is friend or foe due to the use of each other's material. Of the cast, Richard Attenborough is a very well-known name for me and the build-up to the final actions and flight from the enemy is more than fine. The classification road movie is therefore not entirely correct and there are more who think so.

Sea of Sand can't quite measure up to the bigger classics in the genre, but as a small-scale film about a smaller chapter in the war it is still more than fine and gets a solid grade from me.
