America is in an economic recession in the late 1920s. Homeless Trina is starving and is taken by Bill. Bill takes her to the slum where he lives, and she moves in with him. It doesn't take long for Bill to fall in love with Trina. She makes a castle of their residence, but Bill is a bluffer, tactless and unbalanced. When Trina tells him she's pregnant, Bill wants to leave with the northern sun as soon as possible. He wants to leave Trina with some money and plans a robbery with his unreliable companion Bragg.
