Sleepers West plot
Assisted by journalist Kay Bentley, private investigator Michael Shayne secretly accompanies Helen Carlson on the train from Denver to San Francisco. Helen is the only witness in a murder case who can acquit a man falsely accused of murder. An acquittal does jeopardize the election plans of Everett Jason, a politician who has made a quick career. Jason hires several criminals, including Carl Izzard, to take out Helen. Izzard even uses Helen's dodgy fiancé Tom Linscott for this.
