Præsidenten plot
Two generations within the Von Sendlingen family are saddled with the same problem. Just before he dies, the father makes his son, a promising law student, promise that he will never marry below his means. His noble sacrifice has caused him much grief himself. But the son impregnates a governess and, like his father, wants to take responsibility, until his uncle reminds him of his promise. Many years later, the son is overtaken by the past.
