Best friends Peter and Dan spend most of their summer on Fire Island in the company of equally attractive and flirtatious Sandy and conservative Rhoda. It turns out to be a period of psychological changes in which they become aware of their individuality and their sexual desires. That causes major changes in their friendship.

Peter [Bruce Davison], Dan [Richard Thomas], Sandy [Barbara Hershey], and Rhoda [Catherine Burns] are four teenagers who spend a lot of time together during a summer on Fire Island. Peter and Dan are best friends who both have a crush on Sandy, a sexy, flirtatious beauty. Rhoda, with her ordinary appearance and conservative background, is a bit of an outsider within the group. The friends each go through a personal development that will influence their friendship, with their sexual awakening playing a key role.
An authentically acted, well-directed psychological drama in which the four young leads each deliver excellent performances. Ironically, Catherine Burns was the only one to receive an Oscar nomination for her performance: she wasn't nearly as successful afterward as her three co-stars. Nevertheless, a captivating film, albeit episodic in structure, but it's certainly a good choice for those who enjoy a challenge.
