An American woman who beat her abusive husband to death has five days until she is sent to prison. After eighteen years of constant abuse of marriage, Wendy finally finds the courage to call the police and ask for help. She does so when her eldest son is beaten up by her husband for the umpteenth time. The police find both in the driveway of their home, but do not intervene. Not even after the neighbors tell the officers about the ongoing violence of the man of the house. A few hours later, Wendy sneaks into the bedroom where her husband is sleeping. She kills him with a hammer. Wendy pleads guilty. She gets a week before being locked up. One Minute to Nine follows Wendy's last five days as a free woman. Using home videos of the family, One Minute to Nine provides a haunting picture of what domestic violence can do.
