Within the Whirlwind plot
Evgenia Ginzburg (Emily Watson) lives in Russia during the turbulent early years of communism. Initially she is not bothered by the new regime and she manages to get a successful career off the ground. But under Stalin she was arrested on suspicion of being a Trotskyist. Not much later she ends up in a penal camp and Evgenia has a very difficult time that she only manages to survive thanks to her belief in poetry.
