Dirk Bogarde now takes on the role of a "bad boy" in this thriller for which Margaret Lockwood, who had been particularly popular in British cinema in the preceding years, almost earned a BAFTA nomination.

Director Lewis Gilbert actually achieved his first success with "Cast a Dark Shadow" (later followed by "Alfie", "Educating Rita" and even a Bond film, "You Only Live Twice"), which he owed not only to his actors but also to the way in which he led the plot in an atmospheric way to a surprising conclusion.

Good, average crime film from that era.

A strong performance by Dirk Bogarde as the villain. Beautiful performances by Margaret Atwood and Kay Walsh as well. I was moved by Kathleen Harrison's decisive supporting role. What a wonderful, thoroughly English actress she was. I know her mainly from the TV series Mrs. Thursday (which also revolves around an inheritance). I found her naive loyalty utterly convincing in her role as the housekeeper. A role that not only provides entertainment but also places me, the viewer, alongside her, to witness—a little less naively—the demise of a shaky household.
Charlotte Young's true identityis just plain enough, as it hasn't escaped Edward's notice. The plot swings back and forth at the end, like the pendulum in Edgar Allen Poe's famous story, yet still manages to surprise.
This film held me captivated by the acting, the story and a perfectly developed atmosphere.
