Mother Krause and her family live in Berlin's working-class neighborhood, Wedding. Under poor circumstances she, her daughter Erna and her son Paul, live in a small house, which she has to share with another tenant, a thief and his girlfriend and a prostitute. Mother Krause earns a living as a newspaper saleswoman. One day, at the flea market, Erna meets the love of her life, the construction worker Max. She blossoms completely, which does not go unnoticed by one of the tenants. Erna mercilessly rejects his approach. If the tenant marries another woman, it is a party in the small house. Just not for Mother Krause, because her son has stolen money that she saved and spent with his friends.
