Steve Layton is a "journalist" who earns his living writing about the excesses of the rich. His current prey is Toni Gateson, daughter of an influential financier. But she turns out not to be a kitten to handle without gloves and she promptly announces her engagement to Layton in the press as revenge. The stunned Layton is now herself the subject of the tabloids and the two waste every moment throwing mud at each other.
