Powerful film from Belgian soil.

Not a film for everyone. Don't expect clear explanations or many narrative elements, but a very atmospheric film.

Visually it is very impressive in its own way. Totally my thing, that dark, ominous style. The gritty black and white scenes are sublime, and so are many beautiful, dark long shots. This combined with the dark soundtrack reminded me of Valhalla Rising every now and then, but in a completely different setting of course.

The only downside I found were the conversations with the main character. I understand that it may be functional for the film in one way or another, but it made sure that I was sometimes abruptly taken out of the atmosphere, especially in the beginning. Too bad, not necessary as far as I'm concerned, although fortunately it doesn't detract much from this special experience.

4.0* stars.

Not quite for me, this -although you wouldn't expect it with the title- Flemish drama. It is a gloomy atmosphere, with beautiful gritty images and ditto soundtrack. A slow story of a road trip, in which we slowly get to know the fairly straightforward background stories of each of the 3 strange main characters.

The biggest shortcoming is that the premise, on which the entire film is based, is rather unbelievable. Stupid even. That really bothered me, as did the number of empty scenes (other than setting the mood, okay). That hindered my ability to empathize.

It is certainly artfully put together and knowing that this film is a debut with barely any budget and inexperienced actors, that gives it extra points. But I have more in common with atmosphere companion Een Ander Zijn Geluk.

Dimitri Karakatsanis was known to me mainly as a cinematographer or photographer, not so much as a director. Or maybe it's his brother who I remember mainly as a cameraman, anyway. This film was completely foreign to me and almost slipped through the cracks. This is not just a straightforward road movie. The film is mysterious and raises many questions. The whole thing, however, the approach, the style, made it strong enough to keep watching with interest, even though you couldn't really tie much to it story-wise. The montage with flashbacks doesn't really help either.

Not a cheerful film, grim even, but an ideal atmosphere that I do like. Technically very strong again with the necessary auditory support. Narratively I was left wanting, but that is more than likely my own fault.
