Russian diva Alla Nazimova invested a considerable amount of money in this film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play, but the stylized, expressive acting style makes it difficult to access for a wide audience. Moreover, screenwriter Natacha Rambova clings desperately to the original text, resulting in an abundance of intertitles that severely slow down the narrative. It is, however, a fantastic vehicle for Nazimova, and despite the aforementioned shortcomings, it has become a fascinating film. The rumor, spread by an extra (but never confirmed), that the cast consisted largely of homosexuals—allegedly as a tribute to Oscar Wilde—struck the commercial blow to this ambitious melodrama. The static camerawork is offset by the opulent sets and beautiful costumes, both designed by Rambova. And Nazimova is always a feast for the eyes.
