Early Kwan.

Fairly thick romantic film with well-known people in the front row. Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung were among the biggest stars of their time, so Kwan didn't go wrong so early in his career. The film itself is fairly mediocre, but apparently a classic status helps to hand out stars.

Anyone who has seen a somewhat older HK romance knows what to expect. A bit of cheesy pop, some more classic Chinese music and bold, bold emotions. It is romance of the grand gestures, but cast in a somewhat more fantastic story.

Visually it is quite okay, but at the same time not very uplifting. Looking at Kwan's later work and knowing that Kar-Wai was ready to conquer HK (and the rest of the world) it's watchable, but not much more than that.

Not annoying for once, it doesn't take too long, it runs smoothly and is quite nice, but why this should be such a classic is not exactly clear to me after watching the film. Not even after reading all the comments here.

Drama about a doomed love affair between a prostitute and a young man of wealth. Apart from the supernatural twist, a more or less standard story with a star role from Anita Mui, who splashes off the screen.
