Il Cammino della Speranza plot
Capodarso in Sicily is a traditional mining village, where the mine is closed by the owner. The miners go on strike, refusing to come up, but have to give up anyway. Ciccio, Saro and Vanni travel with their families to France to look for work. But Vanni is wanted by the police and soon problems arise.

A masterpiece. It's a blend of social realism—which the Italians excelled at—and (melo)drama. With a touch of crime—see the role of the human trafficker. It's a universally relatable story of people who leave their native region in search of work and a better life. The film is set in the early 1950s, which is also roughly the beginning of Italian migration flows to Western Europe. A finger on the pulse, as they say. And yet, the film doesn't get bogged down in socio-political spheres but focuses on real people, their desires and fears. The Sicilians' journey to France is the central thread through which side plots develop and intertwine. And the main theme—the journey to a better future—remains prominent again and again. All of this is illustrated with beautiful (landscape) photography and a superb score.
