Indeed a very interesting gamble. In fact it was a pure gamble to watch this and it did not really turn out wrong. That Masset-Depasse has talent is clear, but especially the dosing seems to be a problem. Namely the film alternates lesser parts with very good parts.

Overall, the acting is not good enough. All actors get a pass, but their characters remain rather flat, which ultimately leaves the real emotion (which it should evoke) behind. In addition, the plot sometimes gets stuck, which makes the interest wander a bit.

But still it has become a very interesting film, which certainly in the last half hour (and especially in the finale mentioned by braambes) becomes very strong and at times really very good. I will certainly keep an eye on this director in the future. 3.5*

I had already seen the later and much better "Illégal" by this Belgian director and in the meantime many of the angular edges had disappeared compared to this "Cages".

Olivier Masset-Depasse's "Cages" is about love, its waning and its recovery. A theme that could work, but does so here in rare moments. Is it due to the many handheld camerawork that sometimes does not make the action very clear, is it due to the actors (I don't think so, certainly not Anne Coesens) or is the story a bit too improbable or does it contain some absolutely not useful scenes?

Film about relationship problems fought out on a more psychological level, with a tournament for animal sound imitation in sketch form as an original bonus.

How unconditional love grows into something poisonous and how in all your desperation you try to cling to something that is no longer there... Still, a special film in which I also experience the feeling that I missed something to speak of a top film.

Difficult to really put your finger on the sore spot. You already sympathize with the couple and the acting is also fine. Maybe the plot or the events jump from one thing to another. For example, I had a hard time placing that stand-up comedy show in what preceded the couple. As if love depends on that, although the man ultimately indicates that he can let her go without feeling guilty.

Actually enjoyed the film, because Masset-Depasse does many things well. The idiosyncratic atmosphere takes some getting used to, but is certainly successful. This is not just a standard romantic drama. Interesting!
