The prequel to Final Destination.

Nothing official, but it seems that the writer of FD has found some inspiration here. Because this is about one survivor, you should not expect bloodshed à la FD and it also starts rather slowly. But enough entertainment and atmosphere to make it a fine 80's picture in the end.

3.5*

Not much actually happens in this tame horror. Apart from a few creepy scenes, it is still very long-winded. A lot of time is reserved for boring dialogues and other forms of annoying interaction between characters that are not interesting. Mood killers and tension breakers. The film has a lot of them.

How does that work? Well, like this. Just when you're happily getting into the mindset of an upcoming kill or you're just tensely licking your lips at a stalking situation, there's a sudden scene change to something deadly boring or something clichéd follows, which immediately kills the tension. The film really excels in those well-chosen moments that completely destroy the tension level.

Also very annoying are the predictable kinks in the cable that are abused to the point of annoying as a 'tension-increasing' element. Think of a car that doesn't start or a lift that doesn't work. Things like that. Very cliché, and that's why the effect is thrill killing. In addition, there are many scary moments that end in almost-moments. The start is promising, but the sequel doesn't live up to the promise. It never really gets going.

The story is pretty decent. Dean Koontz. Not the least. Writes decent books. His work is also the source of better films. Think of Demon Seed (1977) or Odd Thomas (2013). Films that are more enjoyable.

No, it's not the material that makes the film not do much in the way of suspense. It's really the clumsy execution.
