La Moglie Più Bella plot

"What's your idea of justice... have you ever thought about it?"

In Sicily, a Mafia boss is jailed. He advises Vito, a young man who is his potential successor, to marry a virtuous and poor woman. Vito's eye falls on Francesca, only 15, but beautiful and self-righteous. The girl is candid and has enough self-respect to not just bow down to him. Vito thinks he is losing face and has some of his men kidnap her, after which he rapes her. Afterwards he tells her that he wants to marry. But instead she files a complaint. However, her parents, brother and neighbors refuse to support her.

Story about abuse of power and intimidation by a young mafia leader-in-the-making and a young girl who defends herself against it, against the tide.

The film is nice to watch, but it doesn't really have much substance. The acting doesn't leave a lasting impression anyway.

Film is partly based on the true story of Franca Viola, mid-1960s.

Film about the power of the Sicilian mafia (Damiano Damiani is sometimes called the specialist in such films) and about situations that always put women in the wrong.
Francesca loves Vito, but she doesn't want him to humiliate her and treat her as inferior, under any circumstances. It's an unusual and especially daring position for a woman. When her complaint has an effect, she regrets it, because she loves him...
What is remarkable in the story is the attitude of the parents, the crowd and also the pastor who only reads from the book.
A love film actually with social injustices constantly present.
Overpowering, impressive music and close-ups of expressive Italian mafiosi.
Film takes a while to get going, but still an acceptable work.
Ornella Muti is still very young and certainly beautiful and is still very active in international cinema.

Angry crime film with a number of poignant critical layers, but also a film that has long since been overtaken by its age. Both the dubbing and the stoic acting can count on little support and the visual direction of Damiano Damiani looks outdated. A number of times the camera moves remarkably beautifully with the images, but these are too few to keep the whole thing continuously interesting. The makers certainly have something to say with The Most Beautiful Wife, but in terms of cinematic technique they do not show enough (anymore), which means that the end result is not a very interesting spectacle.
