Dazzling—the sets, the cinematography, but especially Meiko Kaji herself. The story became a bit muddled at one point with all the intertwined plots, but all that was overshadowed by a magnificent finale...wow!

Not bad.

Still, I found it a bit inconsistent. Ishii is more of a gorier and more edgy guy, a kind of Miike before his time. Those are also the moments where this film truly shines; unfortunately, I found the yakuza stuff a bit too mellow.

Visually quite good, some effects (especially the blood) look dated, but thankfully it doesn't detract from the atmosphere. The cinematography is otherwise okay, only during the wacky carnival performance halfway through, it goes a bit too fast. Those are more the kind of scenes I'd like to see from Ishii.

The story is otherwise fairly straightforward, and the acting is decent, though there are a few roles that could have been a bit more engaging (like the bad guy with the glasses). The final showdown is thankfully still worthwhile, though it's more stylish than action-packed.

Nice for once, but just a bit too inconsistent.

2.5*
