Jesus Town, USA plot
For 88 years, the residents of a small town in Oklahoma have performed the passion play every year. Jesus Town, USA is a light-hearted documentary about the confusion that arises in the deeply devout community in the American Bible Belt. The annual performance of the passion play is threatened because the intended protagonist asks himself an existential question: can he, as a self-proclaimed Buddhist, interpret the role of Jesus? In the past, the show could count on visitor numbers that far exceeded 200,000, but nowadays the producer and director are puzzled over the declining public interest; a wavering protagonist is the last thing they need.
