West of Zanzibar plot

"A story of love and revenge in the African jungles!"

Magician Phroso's wife Anna leaves him for another man named Crane, who fights Phroso and leaves him unconscious. Later, Anna returns and he finds her dead, leaving one daughter alone. For eighteen years, Phroso, better known as "Dead Legs", prepares his revenge. In doing so, he becomes a pseudo-king in East Africa, close to where Crane had an ivory business. When the daughter is fully grown, and also lives in a brothel in Zanzibar thanks to "Dead Legs", Phroso turns his plan into an act of revenge and retribution.

More of a drama than a horror, but a film that left us wanting more. In this film by Tod Browning we see a few big names from that time at work. The leading role is played by Lon Chaney, a bitter man (and magician in everyday life) who is out for revenge after his wife runs off with ivory trader Crane (Lionel Barrymore), he is crippled by that same Crane and his wife also dies. All this is more the setting, the real story takes place in dark colonial Africa, where Phroso (Chaney) works his way up among the cannibals with a few helpers to become the local voodoo leader and who plans revenge on Crane. It has a pretty grim atmosphere, especially because of Chaney's performance and the twists and turns in the story, which I won't reveal much about. The setting and the tribal rituals also help with this. There is not much horror to be found here, but I enjoyed it very much.
