New Zealand, a long hot summer in 1975. 12-year-old Billy is about to discover that growing up is a lot more confusing than he ever imagined. Billy, a farmer's only son, finds he doesn't really fit in with the other boys at his school who just want to fight and play rugby. He tries to be like them, but finds himself completely unfit to be a rugby player. Billy dreams of a life in space. He wants to be Lana, the star of his favorite sci-fi series. With the arrival of Roy, the class's piss-pole, and the handsome Jamie, the farm helper, Billy's friendship with the tough Lou, his best friend, comes under pressure. His life changes forever.
