A physics student moves into a room in a sinister boarding house where the 'haunted house' sign is just short of hanging above the front door. The owner is an unpleasant gentleman, a religious madman lives on the ground floor and normal contact seems possible only with his immediate neighbour, an attractive single mother.

A somewhat disappointing fourth installment in the Masters of Horror series. I found the story a bit underwhelming, but I thought the execution was just slightly better. It is all built up in a reasonably mysterious way, and Stuart Gordon works with a rather dark setting for the most part, which only benefits the atmosphere. However, it is a shame that there is little horror in it, meaning there is little to enjoy, especially in the first half. For instance, the rat with the human face is of questionable quality. In the last 10 to 15 minutes or so, the film gets better and better, with more tension and even a fair amount of blood and some light gore. Unfortunately, that is also the immediate end.

HP Lovecraft is someone I honestly haven't delved into yet. The concept of this film is quite nice. The acting is a bit weaker. The special effects too. It all feels a bit low-budget, and undoubtedly it is.
An average film, but it would have been better with better acting and better effects.

Director Stuart Gordon's penchant for practical effects is poorly expressed in this dull chapter of the Masters of Horror series, in which the animated effects clearly take precedence. Uninteresting characters end up in a house with a very peculiar history, but the concepts used to bring it to life look uninspired and poorly thought out. The acting is decent enough, but the absolute killer for this whole affair is undoubtedly the ugly lighting. At times, it is impossible to see what is actually going on. Not very helpful when the ideas presented here are explicitly meant to go for weirdness.
