Haeckel's Tale plot
Ernest Haeckel finds refuge in the New England wilderness, in a remote home with an old man. His host gives him the urgent warning not to go outside at night. But when he sees the much younger lady of the house in her nightgown leaving the house, Ernest can't resist the temptation to follow her. He pays dearly for his mistake when he ends up in a zombie orgy. They like a piece of Ernest.

I would actually quite like to read the story of this one, because the concept was very fun. It is a shame that, with the mediocre special effects and backgrounds, it ultimately comes across as cheap and therefore mostly kitschy or funny, because the subject of necrophilia and a necropolis is enough material to be creepy. As it is, it comes across as only mediocre, although I wasn't bored either. Jon Polito certainly had one of his best roles, and the make-up effects on the undead baby were deliciously gross. Otherwise, just very middle of the road.

MOH episode number 9.
Haeckel's Tale has a nice trump card up its sleeve right from the start: the setting. This creates a nice atmosphere, even though it is quite dark and grim. The film is not blessed with good acting, although it is bearable. Furthermore, it has a few nice moments and the zombies look fine too. The baby is even quite creepy.
I notice that many episodes of MOH easily score a passing grade. Here too, 3 stars are appropriate.

Director John McNaughton provides an atmospheric setup and a story that doesn't immediately reveal itself, but the premise is far too long and uninteresting. The characters don't act well and are therefore not all that engaging to follow for a full hour. Moreover, the choice to prioritize content over the scares proves to be an unskillful one, as it all just meanders along and fails to stick. Characters do encounter supernatural elements, but it never builds to a grand crescendo and essentially fizzles out. Disappointing episode.
