Don't expect a giallo, this is just a mysterious dramatic story in which a maniac makes the village unsafe. Or is there more to it? Evelyn Stewart plays Martha's cousin (Carroll Baker) and is unfortunately not present in the film for long. Baker is good in her role and the rest of the cast is less convincing. For example, Alan Scott as the doctor is too prominent and know-it-all, George Rigaud as the uncle is not a very convincing character (certainly considering the elaboration towards the end) and Eduardo Fajardo as Marco is too conspicuous. Which does not take away from the fact that the mystery remains interesting enough until the end. Unfortunately, that ending is worked out very simplistically and without any tension.
A bit of a shame. 6/10

The opening is rather tasteless: footage of a bullfight in Spain where a bull gets the worst of it. It's a shame that Lenzi and other filmmakers felt the need to draw attention to themselves that way. The symbolism is also far-fetched in this film. Fortunately, after this poor start, things improve. The rest of the film has a good, atmospheric structure in which nothing is as it seems. For a giallo, it leans more towards Agatha Christie than a slasher. I didn't expect that, considering Lenzi's reputation. Nevertheless, it's an entertaining piece. Stylistically, it's Lenzi with his signature zooms. The music is by one Marcello Giombini. It's impressive at times because of his use of synthesizers. This is 1972, so this is truly pioneering in the field of film soundtracks. It's a shame he didn't make his score completely electro, without orchestral elements. Then it might have become a cult score.
