A powerful German shipbuilder lives in a mansion in Hamburg. The man is old and wants to put his affairs in order before he dies. He is visited by his son, a liberal lawyer, and his wife, an actress. In the few days that the couple is in the house, the woman finds a dark secret that takes the family back to the days of World War II.
