The Blue and the Gray plot

By the time the Civil War breaks out, cartoonist-journalist John Geyser gets a job at the newspaper publisher Harper's. Thanks to his account of the trial of John Brown, who fought violently against the slavery of the Negroes in Virginia before the American Civil War, he became a war correspondent. He takes sides neither with the Union (the Blues) nor with the Southern states (the Grays). As a result, he becomes estranged from his pro-Southern family.
