Sakebi plot
When an experienced but stressed-out police detective has to investigate a murder case in which he appears to be involved, he finds himself on the brink of a nervous breakdown. In addition, he is harassed by the ghost of a woman in a bright red dress. The murder case is serialized and the detective's involvement seems increasingly likely.

Nice film that finds a good balance between drama and horror, but doesn't really impress on either level. Plot is also a bit too far-fetched. Still a great watch.

Retribution looks like it will be a fun horror movie. We see the murdered girl come back in the 2nd scene. Not a real shock moment, but it is 'creepy'.
And even though evidence quickly surfaces that Yoshioka himself is the murderer, I still find it a shame how 'obviously' this happens, something more subtle would have been nice.
Yoshioka's dream is the first attempt to become truly uncomfortable, but alas. Not scary at all, but then it is not a real horror film according to the genre designation. What happens next with the victim's mind does indeed show that it is not a real horror, although the standard girl with long hair does appear.
The apparitions are less subtle than in most horror films like Ringu, Ju-On and Shutter. We don't really seem to be dealing with a ghost that wants to scare us, more with a ghost that wants to tell us something. Nevertheless, it is all quite 'creepy', even if that is perhaps not the intention.
There were some low points though. The scenes in the cars for example. What bad editing! Also the Shinya's chase scene looked more laughable than exciting.
But towards the end, when a lot becomes clear, it all turns out to be quite far-fetched.
Despite all that, Retribution was just a very enjoyable watch. I was never bored for a moment, and the mystery kept me busy as a viewer more than enough. So it was definitely a strong film.

Nicely shot (at times also very beautiful) and fine in terms of atmosphere but excruciatingly slow and the film did not really captivate me. The bit of mystery that was woven into the film I could not really appreciate either. The acting is passable but did not really grab me either, everything remained rather emotionally flat for me. 2.5*.
