Ouch.

What really blows me away is the near-perfect way Mara and Redgrave play the young and old versions of Rose. It just works somehow. And Redgrave is an icon, a monument to the art of acting - Mara is good for not being intimidated by that, although it does help that they don't share scenes.

Cinematographically it is also very nice. Beautiful pictures to look at, and very well cared for in the details - I do not notice anything that is out of place, and the locations are also delicious.

What a shame then that the story stumbles from one cliché to another, and tries to hide that with a flashback structure. That kills it for me.

Mediocre film about a young Irish woman who returns from England to Ireland during the Second World War. The first half is boring and slow. The progression is also predictable. The second half (in the psychiatric hospital) is a bit more interesting. The film looks good otherwise. Rooney Mara is good as always.

Beautiful film. With a role unfortunately much too small for the great actor Aidan Turner
