Juventude Em Marcha plot

The elderly, melancholy and defeated Ventura has been abandoned by his wife Clotilde after 34 years of marriage and looks back on a hard and joyless life. Ventura writes her a clumsy but heartbreaking letter (or rather, have him write it). He reads the letter over and over, as he is about to be cut free from his ward and into a bare apartment.

The 21st century counterpart of the infamous TSPDT list is quite okay and has notable unusual titles. However, the inclusion of a title, Colossal Youth, I do not understand at all. Man, what a boring affair: a Portuguese old, poor man is looking for a place to live and the film itself has a lot of boring silences or else a lot of boring dialogues between boring people.

I understand that a filmmaker wants to make a film without frills and show life as it is, but this really went too far. There was really nothing to this, except for some sloppy, nice sets. That gave me the idea of watching a film that takes place in Angola instead of Portugal. I'm willing to assume that the standard of living is lower in Portugal, but this poor thing again seemed grossly unrealistic to me. Anyway, in the end I watched a very annoying forced film.

Sometimes you have to sail uncharted waters to find out how things are going and it's no different with films and directors. The only thing I knew beforehand was that this would be contemplative or slow cinema and otherwise I would experience it.

That of that contemplative cinema is in any case right as a bus, because it is extremely slow at times. Furthermore, it is quite inaccessible and very difficult to get into the film, something that I did not even manage to do in the end. The protagonist leads a boring and very repetitive life, in which there is hardly any tension or excitement. Director Pedro Costa depicts the story itself very realistically, with many static shots and a sometimes quite depressing atmosphere. The big problem, however, is that the viewer gets the same experience while watching the film, at least that was the case with me.

As a result, it eventually becomes a very long session, from which, apart from the sometimes beautiful shots, there is not much to get out of it. The characters remain far too distant, the dialogues are often meaningless and the repetition even starts to irritate slightly. The feeling of Ventura may be conveyed well, but it is not exciting at all. Visually it is nowhere near good enough and something is told in terms of content, which could also be told in an hour and a half.

A few nice moments and a few nice shots are therefore far too little for a film with such a length. I also have the idea that Costa is not a director for me in any case.

1.0*

Dramatically successful and in that respect the characters are interesting and convincing enough to keep you interested for the full two and a half hours. Cinematographically it is static and often underexposed, some scenes seem to have been shot with a video cam. In terms of atmosphere it also fits, a kind of Sokurov world without magic and beauty. Scottish, crooked, sometimes downright ugly.
