At first glance here you probably expect a funny exploitation movie, but it's pretty much the opposite of that. Very slow film with many beautiful long takes, and although the premise could involve a lot of nonsense, it has become a classic yakuza story with a beautiful coming-of-age story, but rather atypically shot, which made me found it so fascinating. 'Idol' Hiroko Yakushimaru also delivers a fine acting performance. Especially beautiful is the scene where she tends to one of her wounded subjects, who then finds herself smelling like his mother and falls helplessly into her lap. There are also some great atmospheric scenes, such as those on the motorcycle or at a Buddha statue. Kind of like the endless fiddling in Masashi Yamamoto his films, but here only as a kind of intermezzo. Coincidentally, those long takes reminded me of K. Kurosawa, and then I read here that he was an assistant director on this film and can even be spotted in the film. On the first page of that forum you can find a lot of information about this movie. I've seen the 112 minute theatrical version of Kadokawa with new custom subs. There is also another director's cut of 130 minutes, which was released a year later in 1982.
