The Final Countdown plot
"Trapped outside the boundaries of time and space... 102 aircraft... 6,000 men... all missing."
History's largest warship, the US nuclear aircraft carrier 'Nimitz', is about to embark on a routine voyage in the waters near Pearl Harbor. The ship is ambushed by a strange electrical storm. When the storm has calmed down, the crew notice that something isn't right. They receive programs from 1940 on their radios and a reconnaissance flight over Pearl Harbor leads to a most curious discovery. The American fleet of 1940 lies completely intact in the harbor; the sudden Japanese attack which destroyed this fleet has apparently not yet taken place. There is no other conclusion: the 'Nimitz' has been knocked back by the mysterious storm to December 6, 1941, the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Knowing what will happen, Captain Yelland is faced with the question of whether to intervene or let history take its course.

Genuine piece of sentiment that hasn't quite stood the test of time. Nevertheless, the film still offers a lot in that sense and the acting is excellent. Cool poster above by the way.
Let's be honest, the sf doesn't look that great anymore, although the shot next to the ship with the bow wave in the foreground and the phenomenon in the background still looked quite good. The film has a few very nice shots anyway and it is a joy to see such a ship with all its activity. A feast of recognition with tough Corsairs, the most beautiful fighter ever, the Tomcat and Sikorsky rescue helicopters and also beautifully portrayed. In that respect, the film is highly recommended. Great action too from the Tomcat playing with the Zero.
Too bad thing about the script to attack the debacle or not to be saved by the bell by a new storm and choose the harepath. Nevertheless, a nice video to watch again.

Nice reunion with beautiful aerial sequences and a clever basic idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't go through completely and doesn't stop the attack on Pearl Harbor . The makers chose the easiest way here. The special effects of the storm are terribly ugly and mar the film a bit. I did enjoy myself in the end, with these soldiers who fall from one surprise to another. Kirk Douglas once again doing a good job as a commanding officer on an aircraft carrier... and what exactly Lansky (Martin Sheen) was supposed to do on that ship is still not very clear to me. You should watch this film especially for the numerous flying demonstrations... Small 3.5*

First a great idea for half an hour, then the characters debate for half an hour what they're going to do, and then – the ship is sent back to 1980 again without anything happening. What a turn off! And then they don't even come back in another time (the Nimitz in the midst of the Vikings, yes!), but just exactly in their own time... The shots on the aircraft carrier are interesting and impressive, and it's funny to think that this movie is a few years before classic time travel movies like The terminator, Back to the future and [i]Peggy Sue got married[ /i] came out, but otherwise this is mainly a huge missed opportunity. (A funny little twist at the end with the limousine.)
